I didn’t mind about recording my time until I noticed that the app was forcibly taking screenshots of my laptop every 10 minutes. Whenever a project is on, users are to turn on the app, and I indulged. The first time I used a time-tracking app was while doing some freelance remote work on Upwork, back in 2015.įor those who are not familiar with the platform, Upwork makes the use of their native time-tracking app mandatory. Let me illustrate with a personal experience. However, there are different ways to supervise remote work, and the results vary depending on what you do. The practice of keeping tabs on employees is as old as work itself, and time-tracking apps only represent the latest iteration of this practice.

How to lose talent and alienate employees Or, as I call it, the screen-grabbing feature from hell. I’m talking about the feature that captures your computer’s screen (and soul) surreptitiously, on a frequent basis. The one that anyone who has ever worked remotely dreads and loathes in equal parts. Nowadays, most products offer other features aside from recording the time workers dedicate to work, including:īut adding to these, there is also that feature.

Naturally, time-tracking software has evolved since then. ClickTime, for example, was launched in late 1999, predating the dot-com bubble burst by a few months (talk about timing!). In fact, they represent some of the earliest SaaS products on record. While new to many, time-tracking apps have been around for some time. Publicly available information about app adoption during the last couple of months is scarce, but it is safe to assume that time-tracking companies are doing well. Among these, time-tracking apps occupy a prominent place.

The lack of full featured, native app support for the iPhone and especially the iPad has more than once had me shopping for alternatives. The pandemic has forced many companies to go remote, and also to adopt productivity tools that are critical for any remote-based infrastructure. Again, I must load Safari and work through the process there. It’s also frustrating that I can’t use the app to create a new client or project. I do 95% of my work on the iPad, essentially running my entire law practice from this one machine, and I have to pick up my phone to start a new timer and task. As someone who relies on Harvest every single day to keep a mobile operation running, it’s also frustrating that there’s not full iPad support (it only runs the iPhone version). You can see limited reports/totals of time spent on projects, but you can’t create/edit invoices on your time or project data unless you head to Safari to load the full site. The app is rather limited to simply tracking the starts/stops on the clock and expenses. I rely on Harvest daily and it's an outstanding time tracking and billing service, but the app is lacking. You really can make this tool fit your specific business. It also has a lot of customizable options, as well. When we hire people, we give them a 30-minute training on the tool and our time- and expense-keeping policies. I really can’t say enough good things about Harvest. I’ve also had to reach out to Harvest a couple of times to figure something out, but they have been very quickly responsive, informative and very courteous. The retainer feature is my only complaint, but the tool does provide a work around if needed. The expense feature took me a little time to figure out, but once I did, it’s extremely easy to use. Timekeeping is extremely easy, running reports for invoices is a breeze, running monthly, quarterly, yearly and custom reports for a range of project tracking and accounting is also a breeze. I truly believe the people who developed the software really did try to think of everything. I’ve been using Harvest now for four years of the six years my business has been open.
